Formula 1 | Meadows ‘never argued’ with Hamilton in 12 years

Mercedes sporting director Ron Meadows has praised the work ethic of Lewis Hamilton, who has always been polite and respectful despite some internal tensions during his time teaming up with Nico Rosberg.

“He’s a unique character, who can sort of compartmentalize his life” Meadows told the New York Times. “I would say he’s probably the most respectful driver I’ve ever worked with. I don’t think for 12 years we’ve ever had a bad word.”

“We often went before the commissioners, especially during Nico’s time [Rosberg] against Lewis, and no matter who was to blame, he always understood that I had to be impartial. We’ve never had a fight once, which is amazing considering how many races we’ve done together.”

“He’s quite demanding with the engineers, because it’s his job to get the most out of them, but he’s always respectful, and when sometimes he’s been a little too pushy, he thinks it over and comes back, and says, ‘yes , maybe I just need to slow down here’.”

Meadows never had difficulty working with Hamilton, even when the latter was honoring fashion commitments between two Grands Prix: “I find him very easy to work with, I’m not sure everyone would say that, but in any case, for my part, I always found it very easy.”

“I think that’s what makes him special, that when he’s here he’s all in, and when he comes to the factory he’s all out, but he knows when he can relax, and some drivers can’t do that, so that’s probably the most unique part about him.”

“When he comes to a race, he’s completely focused on his race, and then you’ll see a post on social media saying he’s 12 hours later on a plane somewhere doing something completely different, which makes him makes him unique from all the other drivers, because there’s so much going on in his life.”

“Charlotte [Davies, responsable des relations publiques de Mercedes] might say something different because she was trying to pull him away from his engineering duties to sit with [les médias]and he’d probably rather sit and watch data all evening.”

“But for me he’s always very helpful when I ask him to do things that aren’t related to the session, he’s always great. He’s always very interested in the young rider part, which I’m kind of involved in with Gwen [Lagrue]and he is very interested in it.”
