Despite being the record holder for pole positions in F1 with 104 achievements, the Briton must prove the doubters wrong when the season begins – and that his erratic pace was, at least in part, linked to Mercedes and the problems recent team updates. He will also team up with Charles Leclerc, known for excelling on a lap, and the dynamics of the very start of the season at Ferrari will be very important to allow the Briton to assume his status by arriving within the Maranello team, where he will the object of all attention.
Mika Häkkinen, 1998 and 1999 F1 world champion, insists that if Hamilton knows deep down he cannot reach the required level, he must be honest, as the Finn himself was when he allowed McLaren to replace him with a young Kimi Räikkönen.
“If something similar happens to him, he needs to speak up”estime Häkkinen. “He is the right person to answer that question, but he is committed to the future. So I am sure he will work on this issue to make things go well this year,” he told PlanetF1.
“I retired in 2001 and that year I started to lose track: sometimes I was very fast. Sometimes I wasn't there. I lost two or three tenths and those two or three tenths are a big, big problem.”he concluded, returning to his own experience.
