“So many efforts ruined in one second”, the despair of title holder Yannick Bestaven after damage

The skipper of Maître Coq was the victim of double damage to a sail and a foil while his boat was spinning in the southern seas. A big blow to morale.

Rage and despair. On the evening of December 23, Yannick Bestaven suffered damage to the attachment of one of his front sails. The halyard gave way and the sail ended up in the water. “Shit ! P…!”screams the winner of the last edition who was in tenth position when this mishap hampered his crossing of the great South. “The hook must have blown. Done…!” continues the skipper, very affected and multiplying the curses before finding refuge in the cockpit of his monohull:“I can’t take it anymore…”

We find the skipper of the boat Maître Coq a little later, still in a video sequence. “Two hours of effort to save the sail. All this for a hook halyard that failed. Two hours alone like a donkey. P….! So much effort ruined in a second. Look at the work… It's torn and everything…”laments the sailor before going to rest.

But the misfortune is double for Yannick Bestaven who also damaged the end of his port foil. “The work is monstrous… That’s what the Vendée Globe is, it can end quickly,” concludes the 51-year-old sailor who will have to take out the needle and thread to repair the sail. As for the foil, damaged and perhaps weakened, it will probably no longer be able to be at 100% of its capacity until Les Sables-d'Olonne.
