George Russell says Max Verstappen “Probably shouldn’t have won the championship this year”saying that others' mistakes helped him secure his 4th title.
The Briton does not dispute the fact that the Red Bull driver is “exceptional”but explains that he was not able to get as much performance as he wanted from his RB20 when it was below its rivals.
“I've been in F1 for six years now, next year is my seventh and fourth year with the team.”
“I absolutely feel ready to take it to the next level and I feel ready to fight for a championship. I feel ready to fight Max and if we get the opportunity, I'm not going to waste it.”
“Besides, we can say that Max should not have won the championship this year, but the others made a few more mistakes and didn't capitalize when they had the chance. Ferrari and McLaren had a better F1 than him.”
“For our part, at Mercedes, I think we won everything we could.”
“Opportunities don't come every day. This year was Lando's luck. McLaren might be there again next year. They might not be. Same, what happens- he at Ferrari with Lewis and Charles? Are they going to take too many points from each other like between Charles and Carlos?
“We just don't know in this sport; no one would have predicted that Red Bull would lose their form in the way they did.”
“There is so much hype around Max. He is an exceptional driver, but the fact is he has only won one or two races out of the last 12 and that shows that everyone can be beaten because you are at the mercy of your racing car.”
“The difference with him this year is that he won every chance he got, and his rivals didn’t.”
