Carlos Sainz is no longer a Ferrari driver, having joined Williams after four years in red to make room for Lewis Hamilton. But Ferrari made sure the farewells were spent with family, literally.
Rather than a greeting card and a box of chocolate, the Scuderia actually took two F1-75s from the 2022 season out of the hangar to allow Sainz Jr to drive at Fiorano with his father. His father being rally legend Carlos Sainz Sr, in case you live under one of the huge rocks that dot the Dakar.
“Even though he spun, Carlos Sr quickly found his rhythm, and completed several runs with consistent lap times,” Ferrari said. After all, if Fernando Alonso is still fighting at the front at 43, perhaps there is an opening for another 62-year-old Spaniard next season?
Carlos Sainz Sr was given a few laps of Fiorano to familiarize himself with the car before his son joined him on the track to drive in formation. We don’t know if the two generations of Carlos managed to keep themselves from pulling each other’s punches. In any case, it doesn’t appear in the image.
After the single-seaters, Ferrari gave the two Carlos Sainz the keys to the 735 LM driven by Piero Taruffi during the Mille Miglia, as well as by Harry Schell and Maurice Trintignant at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was built in 1955, a perfect nod to Sainz Jr’s racing number.
Ferrari posted a preview of the day on Instagram. Warning, emotional sequence.
