Pierre Gasly doesn't think he could do better than the sixth place he achieved in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Alpine F1 driver is satisfied with his fast lap and the progress made before qualifying, after Friday was difficult for him.
“I have to say that I wasn't confident before qualifying, I wasn't comfortable in the car and we made a lot of changes. I had questions but we made some really positive changes” Gasly said.
“We are ahead of Russell who took pole last weekend and just behind Max who is champion this year. It’s pretty crazy to be here at the end of the season, but the team has done a very good job. It wasn't an easy weekend and I'm glad we found the right settings.”
“Honestly when I finished the lap I knew I had given everything. I hoped it would be enough but they were fast all weekend. We optimized our qualifying but for the race it will be another story with the degradation and graining We will prepare well but the fight will be tough until the end.
Jack Doohan finished 20th and last in Q1, but the gaps were so small that the Australian did not have to be ashamed of a performance which brought him less than a second from the best time.
“It was difficult, I'm disappointed with the final result but the most important thing is that I was comfortable. The end of the session was difficult, the exit lap and the preparation were not good for the last but it's good that I'm facing these problems now so I can fix them.” Doohan said.
From now on, he must compete in his first race and will try to do better: “We looked at the data from FP2 yesterday, to see how I can progress, manage the tires better and gain maximum knowledge and experience from this weekend.”
