Max Verstappen has confirmed that a driver on the grid is not in favor of reviewing the rules for on-track battles, as George Russell explained. While he is not against changes, he thinks it will not be miraculous and that other problems remain.
“I think that's the right way to sum it up. We still need to discuss some things. But I think it's mostly to do with the circuits. In some places there's a lot of clearance, and that is already creating a lot of problems, so it's something we need to work on for the future.” Admet Verstappen.
Russell had explained that 19 of the 20 drivers agreed, but Verstappen assures that it was not him who disagreed: “That wasn't the case. It was just a matter of a particular driver agreeing or not agreeing with certain things.”
According to the four-time world champion, the problem also depends on the type of turn, as he explains that hairpins, for example, encourage more of this kind of possibility: “It depends on the track, the shape of the turn.”
“I think overtaking in a low speed corner from the outside is a lot more complicated than in a medium or high speed corner, because that's where most of the time you have momentum, and then it “It's a little different. Plus, when there's no gravel, you can go off the track without consequences.”
“But on some tracks we go to, you either see clear overtaking from the outside, or people backing up, because you're afraid of going into the gravel from the car inside or outside. And I think that already negates 90% of the problems we have today.”
Verstappen reiterates that the main concern linked to on-track battles remains modern circuits and runoffs which allow going off-track without penalty.
“I think everyone agrees with that, but sometimes it's not easy to throw out all the rules. Like I said, I think the biggest problem we have is just, in some places, tracks that have too much clearance.”
“If you want less problems, you have to add gravel traps. But, of course, some circuits are a little more difficult than others, but how hard do you want F1 racing on your circuit? is that simple.”
Qatar did not put gravel traps everywhere, but added strips of gravel behind the curbs. The Red Bull driver sees this as a good solution: “I think it will already help, yes. I mean here there are a lot of high-speed corners, so there are fewer problems, I think.”
“With the type of racing we had in some places. But I think normally, yeah, the gravels, of course, as soon as you touch them you lose a lot of lap time, so you don't want to touch them. You want to touch him.”
