Toyota has not ruled out possibly extending its new involvement in Formula 1 beyond a simple technical partnership with Haas F1.
The Japanese manufacturer, through its subsidiary Toyota Gazoo Racing, has started helping Ferrari-powered Haas with parts manufacturing, technical resources and simulation.
But Toyota Gazoo director Masaya Kaji says he is also interested in developing F1 engines.
“Morizo told us: 'It's been 15 years since we were in Formula 1, so we have to relearn'. That's what we're going to do with Haas initially,” Kaji said, referring to Toyota president Akio Toyoda, nicknamed 'Morizo'.
“I think we need to understand different things a little bit better and look at that as the next step.”
It is possible that Formula 1 could welcome a twelfth team to the grid in the coming years – especially if it is Toyota. But the Japanese manufacturer could also become an engine manufacturer.
The technical regulations will change completely for 2026, in particular the rules on powertrains which considerably increase the electrical component of the engine.
When asked if Toyota was interested in these rules, Kaji admitted: “Of course, I'm looking at everything there is to see. I think it will be an easier system to use in a variety of ways than it is now.”
For now, however, Toyota is excluded from detailed discussions and meetings with F1, the FIA and other engine manufacturers about the 2026 engines.
“I think it would be good to participate in the meetings to learn, but to participate you have to be registered as a manufacturer with F1. This is a step that we have not taken as you know. Let's wait duty.”
