After Franco Colapinto at Silverstone, Williams F1 announced the identity of the driver who would take part in the second free practice session reserved for a young talent. Colapinto is no longer a beginner since he is competing at the end of the season, it is Luke Browning who will drive in Abu Dhabi in EL1, and will continue with the youth tests on the Yas Marina circuit.
The British driver raced in Formula 3 this year, with two pole positions and two victories, for a final third place in the standings. In Baku he made his F2 debut and scored points.
“It’s an honor to drive a Williams F1 for the first time in Abu Dhabi. To have the chance to take part not only in the young driver tests, but also in the free practice sessions, is incredibly special.” Browning said.
“A big thank you to everyone at Williams Racing for supporting my development through the Williams Racing Driver Academy and entrusting me with the FW46. I will work hard to prepare and make the most of this opportunity .”
Sven Smeets, Williams sporting director, explains why Williams wants to give this opportunity to whoever accompanies Colapinto in the academy: “Luke had an impressive season in Formula 3 and took the transition to Formula 2 in stride, performing well in his first outing in Baku.”
“Throughout the year he made an important contribution to the team through his development work and made rapid progress in terms of understanding, maturity and racing technique.”
“We now look forward to giving Luke the opportunity to drive the FW46 in Abu Dhabi, which will be the next step in his development as a Williams Racing Academy driver.”
