“Like driving on ice”

Max Verstappen did not have a very good first day of testing in Las Vegas, struggling on a slippery track.

In EL1, the Red Bull driver finished fifth but more than a second behind Lewis Hamilton, while in EL2, Verstappen finished in a distant 17th position with a time achieved on medium tires. THE triple world champion was two full seconds behind his former rival for the 2021 title.

“It was slippery. I think we had a lot of trouble getting the tires to work, especially on one lap,” Verstappen said at the microphone. “I think the long runs have started to be a little more competitive, but even there I think we need to fine-tune some things.”

“The pace over one lap is quite far. Of course the conditions are unique here and it's very cold, but at the end of the day it's the same for everyone, so we have to try to understand what we're doing wrong at the moment.”

“For me, it's mostly about the tires. The balance of the car is not that bad I think, it’s just that we don’t have any grip, it’s like driving on ice at the moment.”

As a reminder, the Las Vegas Grand Prix could be particularly important for Max Verstappen since he can win his fourth consecutive world title this Sunday.
