The rumor had been growing in recent months, since the first echoes heard in the paddock of the 6 Hours of Fuji in September. It's now official, Lamborghini is absent from the World Championship entry list for the 2025 season, both in the Hypercar category and in GT3. Following this formalization, the Italian manufacturer communicated on this decision. As already written by AUTOhebdo previously, the main reason for this withdrawal lies in the change in the WEC sporting regulations with the obligation for each manufacturer in the Hypercar category to enter two prototypes next season.

« Competing at the highest level is an honor for Lamborghini Squadra Corse and remains an ambition for years to come. The change to the FIA WEC sporting regulations, which now also requires brands to field two cars in the Hypercar category from 2025, also changes Lamborghini's entry conditions into the championship this year and is no longer aligned with the company strategy », Indicates the transalpine manufacturer. Even if the latter never mentions the financial side, it seems paradoxical that with a turnover up 20% over the first nine months of the year (2.43 billion euros) and a backlog of full orders until 2026 do not have the backbone strong enough to carry out such a program.
Lamborghini has chosen to favor IMSA
However, this does not mean the end of the Taurus firm’s LMDh program: “ Lamborghini therefore evaluated its options and chose not to participate in the 2025 FIA WEC while remaining committed to the development of the SC63 by pursuing the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the United States. » The SC63 was also the fastest during pre-season testing for the 24 Hours of Daytona in the hands of Romain Grosjean. This registration in the North American Endurance Championship should not allow Lamborghini to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2025 (June 14-15), due to lack of presence in the World Championship.

Lamborghini also mentions “ a break in the FIA WEC program », which implies the possibility of returning to the championship in the future, even if no date has been mentioned to go in this direction. This could be an intention for 2026, the year when the brand's future GT3, the Temerario, will make its competition debut. With this interruption in its program, Lamborghini hears “cfocus its efforts on the development of the new Temerario GT3 throughout 2025. »
However, will it not be too late to hope for a return to the grid in 2026? Mercedes has already stepped into the breach with the registration of two GT3s for next season, and it is likely that this arrival is only the beginning of an even more important project on the side of the star firm. Aston Martin will also make its debut in Hypercar in 2025 while Genesis is expected, still in this category, the following year. With McLaren reportedly in the running for 2027, there would be little room left for a potential return in the near future.
