Yuki Tsunoda, currently behind the wheel of the Honda-backed Racing Bills, believes he “definitely deserves” a place at Red Bull Racing, but calls being ignored by the main team “business as usual” in comments relayed by Motorsport. Despite Sergio Pérez's difficulties this season, Tsunoda is not considered a serious option for the second seat, priority being given to Liam Lawson or, potentially, Franco Colapinto.
“No matter who, I continue to destroy my teammates”
Tsunoda, who notably surpassed Daniel Ricciardo when they were teammates, is quite grating on the subject. “Some stories have already happened when Daniel was my teammate. Liam showed up and suddenly he's at the top of the list. So, to be honest, it's just the usual story in this team, or in the Red Bull family.” Asked about his merit, Tsunoda responds, as usual, bluntly: “Yes, 100%. I definitely deserve this seat […] but it's really up to them. » Accustomed to managing his frustration, Tsunoda admits to having been impatient before the summer break, but prefers to concentrate on his performances. “No matter who, I continue to destroy my teammates. After Nyck de Vries, it was Daniel, so that’s what I’m going to do,” said the Japanese driver.
And while the Red Bull – Honda relationship could help him get promoted on paper, Tsunoda has obviously learned to be fatalistic. “Honda has helped me since I was young […] but for some reason it doesn't work. I just stopped thinking about it, it’s a useless thing,” concluded the Japanese driver, who will drive the RB20 during the Abu Dhabi tests and remains under contract with the Red Bull galaxy for 2025.
