Almost a year ago, Toto Wolff was caught in a controversy. The Mercedes boss was suspected of a conflict of interest with his wife, CEO of the F1 Academy. The F1 teams, however, showed their support for the couple, and the investigation was eventually closed. Coming back to this affair, Toto Wolff did not fail to tackle Christian Horner, the boss of Red Bull.
In December 2023, a controversy broke out in F1. An investigation has been opened regarding a possible conflict of interest between Toto Wolff – boss of Mercedes – and his wife, CEO of the F1 Academy. These accusations were firmly rejected by the German team and the FIA. The other teams also provided support to the couple, dispelling suspicion and closing the case. At the time, Christian Horner had, however, remained silent. And Toto Wolff admits not to have been surprised by the reaction of his counterpart at Red Bull.
“They were all ready, except Christian [Horner]»
« I haven't made any calls to any team. Fred took matters into his own hands and said, 'This is really unfair.' From Günther Steiner to James Vowles, everyone reacted. They were all ready, except Christian, to sign a document in our favor.” From what I understand, he said: 'I have my own interview on Sky and I'm going to say I'm not part of it. I will not sign the document'. The other nine teams said, “Very good.” But it is obvious that he was told that this would not be very well received and that it should be part of the declaration » first explained the boss of Mercedes in comments reported by F1 Only.
“A lot of things were done out of lack of respect”
« I don't think we can trust what he says. I think that [Susie] was collateral damage and much was done out of disrespect for her achievements as a female racing driver and as a contributor to change. He also tried to cause me pain by disrespecting my wife, diminishing the painful journey she took to realize what she did in and out of the car » then added Toto Wolff. The message has gotten through, and it shouldn't really please Christian Horner et Red Bull.
