Liam Lawson has revealed his father gave him a serious scolding for giving Sergio Perez the finger at the Mexico Grand Prix.
The RB F1 driver, then in only his second race since replacing Daniel Ricciardo, damaged Perez's Red Bull in a collision at Turn 4 during the race.
Perez called Lawson an idiot on team radio and later claimed the New Zealander didn't have the right attitude in F1.
Lawson was seen giving Perez the finger later in the race, which did not impress Red Bull sporting advisor Helmut Marko, nor Lawson's parents.
"It's not something I should have done," he admits today.
“It’s something I’m going to learn from, but at the same time we’re competing at a high level and when you have that much adrenaline, it’s crazy.”
“If I think back on the things I thought or said after a race, especially when I was younger, I calm down and realize how crazy and stupid it was.”
“It's something I learned a lesson from, but obviously when you're in F1 the spotlight is on you and maybe I didn't realize how much people can see everything. You have to be careful.”
Asked what his parents thought about it, Lawson admitted: “They weren't impressed. My father scolded me, as he has many times over the years.”
“I'm very lucky to have someone like my father who played a huge role, obviously, in my upbringing as a man, but also as a driver, growing up and trying to become a professional in sports.”
“He kept me grounded, I would say, and that's something he's done since I was a kid. So, you know, he wasn't impressed by that and I totally understand why. And obviously, like I said, it's not something I should have done, and I will learn from it.”
