Eddie Jordan, former Formula 1 team principal, has strongly criticized the evolution of modern single-seaters, calling current cars “tractors “. Over time, the weight of single-seaters has continued to increase, mainly due to safety requirements and the addition of devices like the halo. With the introduction of hybrid engines and their advanced technology, single-seaters naturally weighed more on the scales.
In 2012, a single-seater weighed around 640 kg. Ten years later, the regulatory minimum weight for the period 2022-2024 reaches 798 kg. The new rules which are to be applied in 2026 should reduce this weight slightly, but it will remain much higher than that of the early 2010s.
In the radio show “Formula for Success”Jordan did not hesitate to express his dissatisfaction with this evolution of F1.
“My goodness, when you were at a race, and let's imagine it was at Silverstone, even though you weren't on the grid, and you were outside or in the grandstand, and the race started, these V10…I can promise you, the ground was shaking ” Eddie Jordan said.
“It was absolutely moving under your feet, as the power transmitted to the noise, to the sound, to the surface, passed through your body. It was sex on wheels. That’s what racing meant to me and that’s what I loved so much.”

“We're too loose, what's happening at the moment, whether it's the regulations or this and that. Will we ever go back to V10s? Probably not.”
“And the second little thing, which is married to that, which makes such a difference, I mean, these cars, and let's be fair to Lewis [Hamilton] and Max [Verstappen] and Lando [Norris] and what they're doing, incredible work with these cars, but they're tractors. They are tractors. They weigh 1000 kilos, they are massively overweight.”
He concluded: “And as far as I'm concerned, shame on the regulations, shame on the organizers and shame on the people who have Formula 1 buried deep in their soul, because they have allowed this sport, in my opinion, to go to a stage that might never come back from here, and I absolutely hate them for it. “
