Dean Jean Le Cam new leader

At 65 years old, the skipper of Tout commence en Finistère – Armor-Lux achieved a superb rise in the rankings last night.

The oldest Jean Le Cam (Everything begins in Finistère – Armor-Lux) retains his position as leader of the Vendée Globe to the east of the rest of the fleet, detached into three compact groups after six days of racing at 7:00 p.m. Saturday (6:00 p.m. GMT). Located between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, the fleet is divided into three groups. Le Cam, aged 65, chose the eastern option followed by only one competitor, Conrad Colman (MS Amlin). A second group with many favorites heads west while a third is located in the middle of the two options at the opposite ends of the spectrum.

Le Cam, 6th participation, which after passing the island of Madeira chose the option to the east along the Mauritanian coast, jumped from 10th to first during the night from Friday to Saturday of this journey around the world alone. “Of course we are looking at Jean’s option, it will be interesting to see if he comes out of it”observe the Italian Giancarlo Pedote (Prysmian), 4e.

Le Cam is 8.44 miles ahead of Sébastien Simon (Groupe Dubreuil), who moved up from 8th to 2nd place in twelve hours. Simon acts as leader for the boats of the «milieu» of the fleet. “We've been racing for six days, it's a global regatta and we're all equal. We are almost experiencing a new beginning”he summarizes. Benjamin Ferré (Monnoyeur-Duo for a job) completes the provisional podium 16.86 miles from Le Cam.

Weöres in great difficulty

The western supporters who led the race for a while stumbled upon a zone of light wind which led to a regrouping, like Sam Goodchild who went from 6th place to 12th place in half a day. The group of ex-leaders, very compact after the equivalent of nearly 3,000 km traveled, should however catch some wind during the night from Saturday to Sunday, which would allow them to be able to regain speed towards the south and resume the advantage. “There, it’s once again a hell of a regatta”exclaims Louis Burton (Bureau Vallée), 34th and west option.

Far behind, the last of the fleet, the Hungarian Szabolcs Weöres, is in great difficulty. He diverted to the Canary Islands to carry out repairs to his mainsail. At this stage, only one of the 40 participants abandoned: Maxime Sorel (V and B-Monbana-Mayenne), injured in an ankle and who had diverted to Madeira to repair a part of his boat.

Ranking of the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (GMT+1) :
1. Jean Le Cam (It all starts in Finistère – Armor-Lux) 22,628.78 miles from the finish
