While F1 and its CEO Stefano Domenicali have again assured in recent days that they do not want to exceed the number of 24 races over a season, even if it means introducing alternating European Grands Prix (read here), the CEO of McLaren, Zak Brown , presented his plan aimed at hosting 28 Grands Prix in the future, but always 24 maximum in one year.
Drivers and crew chiefs have repeatedly stated that 24 races is the maximum that can be achieved without posing health risks to staff members.
“Formula 1 and the FIA collaborate and consult extensively on all things Formula 1.”
“I think we have very good meetings with them. Regarding the calendar, I think like Stefano and the others that 24 is the maximum.”
“As I said earlier this year, I think maybe we should have 20 fixed races and eight races that rotate every two years so that we can continue to grow the sport, because there is certainly a request.”
“So if we could be in 28 markets, I think that would be fantastic. But I think we can only do it 24 times a year. So I'm OK with alternating for some races, that's it. This is how we solve the problem of the expanding calendar.”
The F1 calendar has steadily increased in recent years amid a boom in popularity for the sport. New locations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Miami and Las Vegas were included, and Domenicali received praise from Brown for his management.
“Stefano did a really good job changing the schedule, but it's always difficult because you're dealing with a lot of competition, whether it's from other sports, programs on TV, holidays.”
“So there is this domino effect which is not easy to master. It is therefore not an easy task to set up a calendar. But at the FOM they are very consultative and collaborative. They do not surprise us and They listen to us.”
