“Going to Barcelona to win is another story,” smiles Roy

If the victory in Prague (2-1) brings closer to qualifying for the play-offs in the round of 16 of the Champions League, Éric Roy did not want to plan too quickly for the future.

With 10 points out of 12 possible halfway through the C1 league phase, Brest, which won 2-1 in Prague against Sparta, is almost assured that its continental adventure will not end at the end of January.

But what the coach remembers most is “this feeling of mastery, this feeling of having played the match we wanted to play, with, I find, quite a bit of maturity, even though we are still novices at this level”.

“There is a lot of pride when we prepare matches with the staff, to see that behind it, it translates onto the field and that (faced with) the pitfalls that we had imagined, we can get up to speed in terms of intensity. , in the physical impact that we knew they were going to try to put on us”he clarified.

A perfectionist, Roy still found fault with the performance of his players.

“We are almost disappointed to have conceded this goal at the last second of the match because I would also have liked, despite everything, to leave with a “clean sheet” (match without conceding a goal, Editor’s note)”he noted, immediately specifying that this regret was “the proof that we are very ambitious and that we want to progress”.

Despite his team's victories in Salzburg (4-0) and Prague, Roy preferred not to think too much about the much tougher trip that awaits the club in Barcelona in three weeks.

“It is obvious that going to Barcelona to win is another story again (…) We will hope that in a few days, they will slow down a little, but I am not sure.. .”he joked, while the Catalans won against Red Star Belgrade (5-2) on Wednesday evening.

As for knowing how many points Brest will still need to qualify in this new Champions League formula of 36 clubs, “as we have no perspective, we have no history, we have no history, it’s difficult to know”he noted.

“What is certain is that in the next matches, we will still try to recover, to score points to continue to advance in this competition”he concluded.
