Lando Norris had it bad, after his wreck at the Brazilian Grand Prix, when Verstappen was cruising at full speed in Brazilian waters. The Briton was notably the victim of a bad strategic choice when his team stopped him in the pits at the start of the Grand Prix… shortly before a red flag.
An interruption of the race allowing the drivers who did not stop, in particular Ocon, Verstappen and Gasly, to occupy the first three places when the event restarts. That didn't sit well with Norris. And the Briton did not mince his words after the race, assuring that the success of this trio was only due to luck, in an interview:
“I don't care what people say. Not pitting wasn't the right thing to do. A red flag shouldn't have happened, but the crash finally brought one.” “That's life. Sometimes you take a gamble, and it paid off for them. It's not talent, it's just luck. We were unlucky, that's all.”
Has Lando Norris said goodbye to the title?
Amazing words from Norris, having won his first victory in Miami at the start of the year… thanks to the good timing of a safety car, giving him a great advantage over Max Verstappen.
These words are also to be put in relation to his race this Sunday. The Briton, although starting in pole position, took on water. Overtaken at the first turn by Russell, he also missed turn 4 during the restart, losing a place to Russell. Then he pulled straight again at the first corner of the 42nd lap, to emerge 7th behind his teammate.
If the latter finally let him pass, it would be impossible for Norris to get back on Russell in front of him. And to finish in 6th place. At the same time, Verstappen driving an inferior Red Bull to the McLaren made a sensational comeback from 17th place at the start to 1st. A flawless performance concluded with a big victory with the point for the best lap. Luck, no doubt.
