Formula 1 | Lawson: 'I wasn't going to push myself' to let Pérez pass

Liam Lawson finished outside the points in Mexico as RB looked in very good form at the start of the weekend. He admits it is frustrating not to have been able to make the strategy that earned him two points work in Austin.

“It's very disappointing because our car was strong this weekend. A difficult race, we tried the strategy that worked last week but it wasn't the case here. We needed clean air and we spent the whole race in the gearboxes of other cars, so it's frustrating” Lawson said.

After the race, he spoke with Sergio Pérez, who took him off the track at the start of the race and then complained that the New Zealander came back on him on the track: “Yes, he was annoyed. I don't know where he wanted me to go, I gave him space in turn 4 and he arrived very late.”

“At that point in the race our pace was good, so I wasn't going to push myself. I gave him space in turn 4 and he sent me off the track in turn 5. I avoided the collision but I couldn't go anywhere.”

Lawson, however, apologized for giving Pérez the finger as he passed him: “He spent half the lap blocking me, trying to ruin my race. I was annoyed. That's not an excuse, I shouldn't have done it and I apologize for that. It's not in my character and it's not something that should be done.”

Yuki Tsunoda's race was cut short, as he was caught by Alex Albon, himself held by Pierre Gasly: “It's always been like this in Mexico, my race stopped at turn 1 the last two years. I feel bad, I have nothing to say.”

“The only thing I can say is that the mechanics did a great job repairing the car, and within seconds I was out. I apologize to them and I'm sorry I couldn't make it. make up for it after yesterday's accident.”
