Formula 1 | Pérez says he is indifferent to rumors about his departure: ‘I know journalists well’

After his accident in Budapest, in qualifying, Sergio Pérez was more in the hot seat than ever. Some didn’t even see him making it through the summer break.

And yet, not only is the Mexican still in Red Bull, but he has also been extended for next year.

“I’ve been there so many times” puts Checo into perspective today, for GQ.

At a time when rumors about his retirement are re-emerging, which he has denied, Sergio Pérez is sticking to his position: he will stay with Red Bull in the medium term.

“I know them well [les journalistes]. I know how they try to put pressure on. They like to get the short sentence. »

“That’s how sport works. You have one or two bad races, there’s a lot of negative talk about you, and so on. But it’s also something that’s part of the team culture – at Red Bull. Discussions around, contract negotiations, etc. It’s just part of the game.”

However, hasn’t Sergio Pérez thought about leaving Milton Keynes to play in a team where he would be the leader? Where there would be less pressure?

“When I thought about it, I said to myself, I really like the challenge I have at Red Bull. It’s a huge challenge to be Max’s teammate. It’s a challenge that basically trains you for everything. So I said to myself, I want to spend the last part of my career at the top, at the top, where the pressure is maximum. »

“At the end of the day, when you’re going through a tough time, there’s a lot of talking,” he added.

“But in the end, there is 90% of the grid who would have loved to have my career. »

“When you’re a driver, you only think about the next race – the next challenge, the next category, the next contract. It’s always ‘next Grand Prix, next, next’. Sometimes it’s good to take a step back and remember how far you’ve come. It’s a very brutal sport. »

Even after his crash in Q1 at the Hungaroring, Sergio Pérez would not have thought of activating other emergency routes?

“I had already decided to stay,” he said.

“It was mostly speculation. The main thing is to get our season back on track. It’s not a question of contracts. »

“The most important thing is not to give up and not to fall into a comfort zone. Whether in good times or bad, riding the waves is the most important thing. This is the only way to have a successful career in this sport. »

“There is no other way. »
