Despite the end of his career that he knows is getting closer and closer, Fernando Alonso is fully pumped up in his final challenge in Formula 1 at Aston Martin since the recruitment of Adrian Newey. The emblematic technical director will join the English team in the spring of 2025 and will mainly devote himself to work on the 2026 single-seater, designed under the aegis of the future regulatory cycle.
For the Spanish driver, the conquest of a third world title remains possible and he does not hide having himself been proactive in the desire to work with the engineer who previously made the heyday of Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.
“When he decided to leave his stable, I hoped Adrian would join us”trust Fernando Alonso. “At the beginning, we dreamed that it could be a possibility. There were a few rumors with different teams and I asked Lawrence [Stroll]to Martin Whitmarsh, and to several people in the team if we had contacted Adrian.”
“I even ended up contacting him. I have his number and I sent him a message: ‘What a surprise! If you ever want to take on a new challenge, I would love to work with you one day.’ I then discovered that Adrian and Lawrence were in contact. Lawrence kept me informed of the negotiations. When Adrian decided to join us, I was very happy but also very proud that he wanted to work with us and believed in our project.”
“It also shows what Lawrence can do, because only he can do certain things. His passion for motorsport and his vision for Aston Martin is limitless. I’ve never seen anything like it, someone so determined, as well as passionate. He is a source of inspiration for all members of the team. It is a privilege to work with him.”
Fernando Alonso does not hide the influence that the planned arrival of Adrian Newey has on the way he envisages the rest of his career, he who has returned for at least two more seasons with Aston Martin.
“I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it.”he admits. “Adrian will arrive next March and focus on 2026, so we will see how I feel at the end of 2026 and if I can continue. It will be a decision that we will make together, with the team, with Lawrence, with Adrian.
“For me it’s an incredible opportunity because driving an Adrian F1 car is something very special, but also because when you work with people of his caliber it’s extremely rewarding.”
