Formula 1 | ‘Strong bond’ with Max Verstappen is Marko’s ‘motivation’

Helmut Marko has recalled the period at the start of the year during which he was threatened with suspension within Red Bull, because the team feared that he would communicate confidential information to the media.

“It was certainly not a very pleasant period, during which many rumors circulated” remembers Marko. “Oliver Mintzlaff came to Saudi Arabia, where we had a long and good conversation. A second Red Bull executive, Franz Watzlawick, was also there.”

“We had a good conversation with him. And yes, this suspension was one of many issues at play in the transition to new management following the death of Dietrich Mateschitz, with the Thai side of the company now wielding much influence bigger.”

However, he reveals that the reason that pushes him to continue in this work is mainly Max Verstappen and his entourage, in addition to the passion for Formula 1: “I am independent. I don’t need this job. My motivation is my passion, my enthusiasm for the sport.”

“And of course the strong connection with Max Verstappen and the Verstappens in general. It was clear to me that if I stayed, I would not be hindered or limited in any way, so that I could still do what I wanted. “There’s something better for Max.”
