“The cars will be very different again next year”

Aston Martin performance director Tom McCullough says the cars of 2025 will be very different from those we see today, despite the end of an era regarding F1 regulations.

It’s no secret that the Formula 1 teams have already been working for a long time on the single-seaters that we will see on the track next season. But the teams must also begin the development of the 2026 single-seaters, governed by new aerodynamic and engine regulations.

We are in a transition phase in wind tunnel and CFD”, McCullough said. “At this point in the year you’re doing the big architectural things that could be crucial for next year’s car. This is therefore where wind tunnel development is most important. But we make a lot of decisions about the whole design of the car, about the dynamics of the vehicle, about the suspension.

2026 target for Aston Martin?

The 10 teams are therefore currently forced to divide their research and development resources into two very distinct projects. However, it is not possible, for a large part of the teams present on the F1 field, to abandon the 2025 project in favor of that of 2026.

There’s still a lot you can do for next year’s car”, he said. “You have to understand the limitations of this year’s car and try to remedy them, whether mechanically, aerodynamically or otherwise. This is the key phase. The cars will be very different again next year. These will be developments [des voitures actuelles]but everyone is trying to take big steps forward.

Aston Martin will soon begin a new part of its F1 adventure. Indeed, its owner Lawrence Stroll has invested heavily in the infrastructure of the Silverstone-based firm. New offices, new wind tunnel, not forgetting the arrival of Adrian Newey. This set should allow the green single-seaters to fight for victories as well as world titles. For the moment, Aston Martin can only helplessly watch the battles between Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes. Fernando Alonso is now ninth in the drivers’ standings, ahead of his teammate Lance Stroll, eleventh. But Aston Martin sees further and is probably betting a lot on the 2026 season.
