Formula 1 | ‘Either you bite or you get bitten’: Sainz stopped being nice and polite in F1

Current Ferrari driver and future Williams F1 driver, Carlos Sainz is considered one of the references in the paddock.

But how do you describe the man behind the pilot? If he had to define himself in three words, what would Carlos Sainz answer? He thus spoke in more depth to the FOM…

“I would say I’m thoughtful, rational and good at foosball. »

What would be the best quality of the Spaniard?

“I hate talking about myself. I really don’t like being asked these kinds of questions, because I think there are already too many people in the paddock analyzing me and saying how I am. I leave that to others! What I can tell you [d’après] what people say is what I said, rational, thoughtful, strategic, things like that. But honestly, I follow what people say. I don’t like talking about myself! »

Is it possible to have friends in the paddock – friends who are also other drivers?

“I obviously have friends within the team… Outside… Friend is a strong word that I don’t like to use for anything or anyone. Of all the drivers and engineers, I would say my best relationship in the paddock remains with Lando [Norris] and some of the engineers I had – Tom Stallard, Ricky [Riccardo Adami] – with whom I have very good relations. »

During his rise, what was the best advice Carlos Sainz received? Did it come from his father?

“I always say more or less the same thing, which is to say that I remember that when I came to karting and I was 10 or 11 years old, I was a little too nice and too polite to the other pilots, always thinking everyone was my friend. My father told me that in this sport you either bite or get bitten, and it’s best to start biting now. Since then, I have become the one who always tries to push and bite! »

And the worst advice?

“I would say things like ‘be careful,’ things that make you cringe a little bit. When you are told to take it easy, then you always go there with a little fear, without wanting to push hard. I always give my best when I don’t worry about the situation and I have only one mentality, that of going for it, and I think that’s the best mentality you can have in any any condition, in any sport, in anything. »

If Carlos Sainz had not been an F1 driver, what job could he have done? Why not coach and physical trainer for a pilot?

“I wouldn’t mind, actually!” I would also like to be a strategist for a day, maybe a team manager for a month, to see how it goes. Things like that! »

“To touch on all professions. Being a race engineer, being on the radio with the driver, talking to him, because I know what the driver wants and what he needs. This is what I would like to do, to gain some experience in all areas. »

Does Carlos Sainz still see himself at Williams F1 in 5 years? What goal does he set for 2030?

“I see myself somewhere where I can be world champion. Either I already would be, or I would like to be about to be! But I want to be in the right place, at the right time, trying to be world champion! »
