“I haven’t been myself all the time”, Hervé Renard breaks the silence

The former coach of the French women’s team, Hervé Renard, believes he is “responsible” for the failure at the Olympics and thinks that the Blues especially failed mentally.

Appointed in March 2023 with the main objective of a medal at the Paris Olympic Games, Hervé Renard left the French team empty-handed. Les Bleues were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Olympic Games by Brazil (0-1). “I set myself objectives which were the same as those given by the Federation and I did not succeed”recognizes Renard in the columns of The Team this Wednesday.

“I’m responsible”supports the 56-year-old man, who still retains a slight frustration with refereeing. “I think we should have been a little more protected, but that’s not an excuse”slips Renard, who nevertheless concedes that the Blues had scoring opportunities. For him, the main fault of the Bleues lay elsewhere: “I read a few statements where the mental aspect was mentioned. This is the first reason I gave. We are too mentally weak.”

He misses some French players, “but not all”

Having played for Zambia, Morocco and Saudi Arabia, Renard led a women’s team for the first time. “Perhaps I was less harsh, breathes Fox. I didn’t manage to achieve the goal, maybe I had to be different. I wasn’t myself all the time.” And to add that he misses players, “but not all. Since many of them don’t miss me, that’s normal.”

The rest, Renard envisages him rather at the head of a men’s selection, with the 2026 World Cup in the back of his mind. Provided that it does not drag on, otherwise he could return to service in a club. “In my mind, I’m not going to take a year off. In January, if I don’t have a national team, what am I going to do?asks the winner of the African Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015.
