Monaco comes a long way by securing a draw in Zagreb

Trailing for a long time, the Monegasques won an almost unexpected draw against Dinamo Zagreb (2-2)

Under the deluge of Zagreb where some courageous Monegasque supporters made the trip, Monaco almost took on water against Dinamo (2-2). But in sport, mentality and character often take precedence over physicality. Thanks to two late goals from Salisu (74th) and Zakaria (90th), the Rocher players achieved an almost unexpected draw in hostile territory. A draw which does not, however, confirm the feat achieved on September 19 against Barcelona (2-1).

From the start, the pressure was Croatian. Defender Salisu had to do his best to avoid Dinamo’s first goal (4e) on a nice strike from Baturina. Before the quarter of an hour of play, the Rocher players had a big chance but Minamino missed his face-to-face. The rest was more confusing, with five yellow cards distributed (two for Monaco, three for Dinamo Zagreb). But that was without counting Susic’s opening goal after some fantastic work from Baturina – him again – before returning to the locker room.

Zakaria delivers Monaco

When returning from the locker room, few or no opportunities. The returns of the prodigy Ilenikhena, Balogun, Ben Seghir then Diatta brought new life. But the very restless Baturina hit the nail on the head by playing with the Monegasque defense and curling his shot perfectly (66th). It was then that, on a messed up corner, the Principality players reacted and reduced the score thanks to defender Salisu, with a header (74th). There was hope again… At the end of regulation time, Balogun was pushed into the box and Zakaria, from the penalty spot, gave his team a draw. Adi Hütter’s players return from Zagreb with a smile and will face Red Star Belgrade on October 22 in a match still within their reach.
