“I don’t understand any of this”, Anthony Lopes’ bitterness about his situation as fourth goalkeeper

A starter in recent seasons at , Anthony Lopes is having a hard time with his demotion in the goalkeeping hierarchy and attacks the management of OL, whom he accuses of a lack of transparency.

Anthony Lopes has completely disappeared from circulation in Ligue 1. Or almost. Installed in the OL goal for a decade, the goalkeeper now occupies fourth place in the hierarchy of this position. A dizzying decline that the 34-year-old does not understand. He expressed his dismay and his incomprehension in the columns of L’Equipe, confiding that “the situation was very difficult to accept”.

“I simply think that I am not part of the hierarchy of goalkeepers at OL. I am in the place I was given, which is to say none. I accept the situation as best I can, knowing that I have no other choice available to me. I am in the training group but not in the hierarchy, since I cannot apply to play.he regretted before accusing his leaders of a lack of transparency.

Lopes believes that the leaders should have informed him of their intentions concerning him in recent months, which was not done. “So first of all, I would like to say that no one warned me that my place was in question. I was clearly not told anything in January. I prefer to set the record straight at this point. Then, with the arrival of Rémy and the fact of being out of the group, I never imagined it would come to this. You should know that I have never been criticized for anything sportingly or in my involvement in training or in the locker room… But the reality is that today I watch the matches from the sofa.added Gone, specifying however that he had discussed once or twice with coach Pierre Sage. Without success: “The things we said to each other, I don’t prefer to talk about them. In fact, it was not a coach-to-player discussion, but a man-to-man discussion, and it will remain between him and me.

No way out this summer in the transfer window

The situation is all the more frustrating as Lopes learned late, at the beginning of August, that he would no longer have his chance (Lucas Perri, recruited last January, is now No. 1, editor’s note). A departure this summer in the transfer window could not be made: “From the moment I understood that the club absolutely no longer counted on me, I opened all the doors. My goal was to find a number 1 place to continue playing and developing. But the opportunities did not arrive unfortunately.»

In the meantime, Lopes, supported by the supporters, endures the situation, disillusioned: “I don’t understand any of this. I don’t think like that so I can’t understand. I didn’t get any explanations. Since no one criticizes me for anything sportingly and for my involvement throughout the weeks, how can I understand it? If I had not been up to the task at the end of the Championship, given the stakes, I would have left the team well before”he insisted, admitting to being looking for a new challenge.
