Former Valencia President’s Racist Remarks

Paco Roig, former president of Valencia football club, made racist remarks against Real Madrid and insulted the player Vinicius, in an interview with the Spanish press.

In an interview given to the site Relevo published on Sunday, Paco Roig, president of Valencia between 1994 and 1997, spoke about the issues of racism in Spanish football stadiums. Real Madrid’s star striker Vinicius has been a frequent target for several years by fans, whose insults and mockery are sometimes racist.

“Before, there were no such problems. Or I had not noticed them.”said Paco Roig. “It’s just that in Madrid there is this guy who is… I call Madrid the Real Immigrants. Madrid has eight blacks, two white foreigners and a Spaniard, Carvajal.”added the 85-year-old.

“Vinicius is a shit as a person”

Vinicius had been the subject of monkey chants during a match on the Valencia pitch in May 2023. In a statement, Valencia said “regret the events that occurred” and announced the opening of an investigation. The club was sanctioned with a partial closed-door session for three matches and a fine of 27,000 euros.

Since this incident, Paco Roig has not hidden his strong resentment towards Vinicius, a 24-year-old Brazilian striker. “He’ll be a great player, and I think he already is, but he’s a… He’s a piece of shit as a person.”the former leader said. Three supporters were arrested by the police after the match and admitted to having made racist insults. They were sentenced to eight months in prison last June.
