Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula 1 world champion, has revealed that he is very hostile to the points scale currently applied.
When asked what he thought about the point award for the fastest lap in a race ending in 2025, the Canadian went much further in his wishes.
“I would change the whole points system. The points system is horrible. It's really outdated. It's too focused on the winner. And half the drivers don't score points. So you see them fighting like crazy for 15th place.”
What would he like to see in F1?
“Who knows, but at least the last one to finish or whoever qualifies on pole should get a point. So 20th gets a point. Someone who has done 15 races outside the top 10 and finished ahead of another 15 times should have more points than the one who finishes last twice. Currently they both have 0 points.
“I guess it's more of the American points system we need, where every little step is worth something to fight for. It would be a complete overhaul of the points system.”
-Does he think this will happen?
“I don't see it getting to that point. You know F1 is having a lot of trouble adapting and modernizing in that sense. There are a lot of old rules, and I'm one of the people who defend In general, I often struggle with the modernization of these kinds of rules, but yes, the points system has been out of fashion for far too long.”
