Lewis Hamilton is, along with Fernando Alonso, the most experienced driver in the paddock. Before starting his 19th season in Formula 1 with Ferrari, the seven-time world champion was questioned about the aggressive behavior of several of his competitors in recent months. We obviously think of Max Verstappen, whose battles with Lando Norris sometimes crossed the limits. However, the Briton indicated in the columns of Motorsport that the pilots were not more aggressive: “I don’t think so. I’ve been racing for a long, long time, so I’ve done some karting, and I wouldn’t say Formula 1 has become more aggressive. When I came to Formula 1, I was racing against Fernando, who was very tough and difficult to beat on the track, and I would say it was no different to today. »
Hamilton pleads for the return of gravel bins
For him, the main change comes from the evolution of the circuits. The increasingly marked absence of gravel around the tracks makes outings less damaging, which, according to him, leads drivers to take more risks: “The only difference is that the circuits now have all these run-off areas. When I started we didn’t have these big areas, so when you started riding you really had to work your way up to the limit. You couldn’t go beyond that, go off the track and come back. […] I think it allowed them to familiarize themselves with the discipline and find the limit where, in Fernando’s time and before, you couldn’t exceed it, [sinon] we found ourselves in the gravel. At Pouhon, for example, turn 10 at Spa, there was grass and gravel just after the curb, which was really scary when you entered a corner like that. » For Lewis Hamilton, the return to gravel is essential, even if he doesn’t believe in it: “So I would say that’s the biggest change and it would be great to go back to the old school, if possible. Gravel traps or something. It might not be safe, but we’ll see. »
