Lando Norris has expressed his full support for his former teammate Carlos Sainz, saying the Spaniard is the key to reviving Williams' fortunes in Formula 1. Sainz, who recently left Ferrari to make way for seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, embarks on a daring mission to restore the iconic Grove-based team to its legendary status.
After finishing the 2024 season narrowly missing out on the Constructors' title with Ferrari, Sainz changed course to Williams, a team languishing in ninth place. Despite the daunting task ahead, Norris believes Sainz's expertise and courage will spark a revival.
“They didn't have someone with real top-team experience like Carlos,” Norris said. “He will propel the team forward. Williams has improved, but now with Carlos they will take an even bigger step.”
Eyes on the Prize: Williams and the 2026 Rule Change
Norris highlighted the 2026 rule changes as a potential turning point for Williams, giving them a chance to join F1's elite. “2026 is a year where anything can happen,” Norris said confidently. “Williams could suddenly be in the lead. We will have to wait and see.”
The Briton also acknowledged the uphill battle Sainz faces, but maintained his former teammate's skills are undeniable. “Carlos deserves a good seat, to fight for championships and victories,” added Norris. “It’s a shame he’s not in contention at the moment, but I have no doubt he will help Williams get back to the top.”
Sainz's legacy at Ferrari and the fight ahead
In a bittersweet farewell, Sainz took two race victories and fought valiantly for Ferrari's Manufacturers' bid, culminating in a thrilling second place behind Norris in Abu Dhabi. Norris reflected on their last fight, saying, “You always knew Carlos was going to fight. I told my team this morning, 'Let's watch out for Carlos!' He is relentless. »
The Hamilton factor and the future of Sainz
As Sainz begins his journey with Williams, Norris also recognized the seismic shift at Ferrari with the arrival of Hamilton. “Carlos has proven that he belongs in F1, no one should doubt him. It’s just that the biggest name in F1 wanted his seat,” Norris said. “But his time will come again. »
With Sainz now in charge, Williams fans have every reason to hope that the team's storied history of success could be revived. And with Norris cheering him on, Sainz is set to lead one of the most ambitious comebacks in F1 history.
