So it’s official. Liam Lawson will replace Sergio Pérez at Red Bull. The young New Zealander therefore pushes the Mexican driver towards the exit. Discover the different options that are now emerging regarding the future of Sergio Pérez in F1.
The mystery was no longer really a mystery. Already at the start of the week, it was announced that Red Bull had made its choice regarding whether or not it wanted to keep Pérez. The Austrian team took the time to thank the Mexican driver.
“He will always remain a valuable member of our history” wrote Christian Horner via an official press release. If Red Bull therefore has its full grid for the 2025 F1 season, what about the future of Sergio Pérez?
A forced break in 2025 for Sergio Pérez
“He decided to take a step back to focus on his family and think about his future” said Christian Horner (Sky Sports). An exit which suggests that Czech will not drive on Formula 1 circuits in 2025.
Forced break or real desire to rest? Today, it is difficult to have a clear reading of Pérez’s choices. Especially since the Mexican seems to have been pushed out by Red Bull management. Enough to modify the initial plans of the Austrian team, which wanted to offer him an ambassadorial role for next season.
“A great team or nothing”his father is not closed to F1
However, it is not certain that Sergio Pérez remains inactive for too long. Asked by Formula Groupthe Mexican’s father is convinced: the door to F1 is not closed. “If something very good and very big happens in Formula 1, I have no doubt” said Antonio Pérez Garibay.
Reading between the lines, we understand that Sergio Pérez would not be against the idea of returning to F1, but on one condition: signing for a major team. Currently, no places are free on the 2025 grid.
Checo’s father removed the possibility of considering a signing for a less prominent team than Red Bull. “I don’t think he will go to a team like Sauber or Haas” he insisted. Only Liam Lawson’s place currently appears to be free. However, it is Isack Hadjar who should support Yuki Tsunoda within Red Bull Racing.
Will the Mexican pilot retire?
Enough to leave a final scenario in suspense: what if Sergio Pérez retired as a Formula 1 driver? The Mexican assures him, “this is just a break before deciding on my next challenge”.
It remains to be seen whether Checo’s future takes shape far from the F1 circuits. In his interview for Group Formulathe Mexican’s father was clear on this subject. “No Indycar, no more NASCAR, no more Le Mans. If there is no big offer, it was his last race”.
At 34, Sergio Pérez could therefore have said goodbye to the world of Formula 1, and taken early retirement. The driver will then have participated in 280 Grands Prix, signing 6 victories and placing himself on the podium 39 times.
