Formula 1 | Gasly, surprised by the absence of Ocon, will 'optimize' things

Many believe that Esteban Ocon's departure was decided solely by Flavio Briatore, the new executive advisor of the Alpine team, without even involving its director, Oliver Oakes.

The situation leaves Oakes with a rookie driver tasked with helping him defend sixth place in the standings. He's trying to put on a good face in Abu Dhabi.

“I think Jack is professional enough to handle this, and I think if we take it easy in FP1 and FP2 today, he'll be ready to go well afterwards.”

“The team is clearly very good at developing young drivers – they didn't get enough credit for Oscar Piastri, in my opinion.”

Even Alpine starter Pierre Gasly admits the Ocon news took him by surprise.

“Yes, I was surprised. In the end, things were discussed behind the scenes, but I can't say much more. I'll just focus on my work here.”

“I know exactly what my goal is for this weekend. I know what I have to do on the track. It will be an intense battle until the finish.”

When asked if Doohan's sudden arrival made Alpine's task more difficult, Gasly replied: “I don't think so. I know Jack well and of course it won't be easy for him.”

“But I talked to him and told him not to have any abnormal expectations. I'm confident he's ready, but it's up to the team to make him feel comfortable “I especially have to make sure I optimize things in qualifying and in the race.”

“Then we will see if we stay ahead of Haas or not.”
