Formula 1 | Lawson makes his mea culpa and seeks a good balance in his approach

Liam Lawson appears to have heeded the criticism that has emerged against his approach to , first leveled by Sergio Perez following their clash at the Mexican Grand Prix.

The RB F1 driver was also reframed by Red Bull bosses Christian Horner and Dr Helmut Marko.

He recognizes today that he could have done better in his battle on the track against the Mexican.

“First of all, I obviously didn't want to hit a car, and especially not a Red Bull car.”

“That wasn't my goal at the time of the incident either. I was trying to avoid that. So, looking back, maybe I could have done differently, like cutting the chicane and avoiding Sergio altogether .”

“But I'm also in the race and I only have a split second to make this decision. So I talked to the team about it afterwards, I thought about it and I will learn from it.”

At Interlagos, the two drivers faced each other again on track. This time everything went well. Lawson is looking to strike a balance, as he wants to earn promotion to Red Bull, but he also doesn't want to upset what could be his future team.

“I think it depends on how you look at it. Some might think it was too aggressive in Mexico and some might not. Obviously I'm going to drive the way I know how and do the best I can. We all make mistakes and there are things I reflect on, but I'm also a runner and that's what I was trying to show as well.

The driver understands that an accident with an RB20 is not the best idea to support his candidacy.

“Yes, of course, but obviously the objective is not to collide with a Red Bull. So, as I said, the incident itself, there are maybe things I could have done differently to avoid it But these are things I will now learn from.”
