Luis Enrique ready to cut his salary by “25 or even 50%” to skip press meetings

Luis Enrique is not a big fan of press conferences, that’s nothing new. It’s one of the topics he addresses in the documentary he’s the subject of on the Spanish channel Movistar +our colleagues having followed him closely during his first Parisian season. Documentary available in a few days and in which he says in particular that he is ready to lower his salary to avoid meetings with journalists.

The former Barça coach was invited to comment on these remarks this Thursday, on the eve of the reception of Rennes during the sixth day of Ligue 1. “Actually, I have a good time with you. It’s true, I have a good time when I speak with the press, I have never cut short a press conference, I like to talk, I say everything I have to say, I can also do it in another language even if I don’t do it very well, but it was a spontaneous reaction. If you give me the choice, if you tell me that I sign a paper and that I no longer speak with the press and that they take away 25 or even 50% (from my salary), I sign. I think it will be impossible, though, contracts require coaches to talk. Honestly, I have a good time, but if I could avoid it, I would. Especially after games. It’s hard. I don’t have the energy at that point to put up with certain things. But then again, I have a good time. I don’t know if that’s the case for you. I see you laughing sometimes, so I think you don’t have such a horrible time with me either.”he joked this Thursday.

Also in this documentary, Luis Enrique also explained that he would not have liked to coach PSG at the time of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. It is not surprising, Mauricio Pochettino and Christophe Galtier had the greatest difficulty coaching the Parisian team at that time, without the possibility of bringing the competition into play for example, nor of making tactical innovations or of applying strong pressure when losing the ball.

On this subject, Lucho did not want to add anything more: “I don’t remember that anymore (smiles). I’m going to take advantage of this press conference to say that I will refuse to comment on any sentence taken out of context in the documentary. What I say or do in the documentary is what I say or do in a match situation, when I prepare for matches, but all the sentences about my team, the opponents, positive or negative, that’s part of my job as a coach, which I love. I don’t regret anything I said but I won’t comment on it out of context because it was in the heat of the moment. What I said, I think it, it’s my opinion. I’m not saying it’s good or bad, it’s just my opinion.”The doc will be available on September 30.
