McLaren have announced the upcoming arrival of Will Courtenay, currently head of strategy at Red Bull Racing, a role he has held at the Milton Keynes team for 20 years.

While the battle between McLaren and Red Bull has been raging on the track for months, there is another battle going on behind the scenes to try to attract the biggest talents, and in this little game, McLaren has managed to poach Red Bull team strategy manager Will Courtenay, who will join the British team in the coming months.

“We are delighted to welcome Will to McLaren. His experience, professionalism and passion for motorsport make him the ideal candidate to lead our F1 sporting function.” said Andrea Stella, McLaren Team Principal.

“We are now entering a key phase of our journey as a team, and we are confident he will be a great addition to our strong leadership team as we strive to continue to challenge for victories and championships.”

No arrival date has been announced by McLaren, but Will Courtenay should logically respect a so-called “gardening” period after his departure from Red Bull, that is to say that he will have to wait a few months before joining his new team, industrial secrecy obliges.

As a reminder, the McLaren team is currently leading the constructors’ world championship with a 41-point lead over Red Bull Racing, with six Grands Prix still to go.
