Linette surprised by Labrune’s fixed salary

Cyril Linette, candidate for the election of the presidency of the Professional Football League (LFP), detailed his program in the After Foot on RMC on Wednesday. The former head of Canal+ notably mentioned ways to improve the criticized offer of the broadcaster DAZN, or launched the idea of relaunching the Coupe de la Ligue in a new format. He was also asked about the salary of Vincent Labrune, the current president who saw his annual emoluments triple (from 400,000 euros to 1.2 million euros gross) after reaching an agreement with CVC in 2022. If the amount does not surprise Cyril Linette so much, the latter is however ticked off by the fact that it is fixed.

“This year, there would have been no variable salary payments”

What would then be an “acceptable” salary for a president of the LFP? “Compared to the initial salary, it must be aligned with the loss of revenue of French football, at 40 or 50%,” he says. “I think that the same scale should be applied to the president of the League, I find that normal. I was a little surprised – I had already said it – that it is a fixed salary. In general, when you have this type of responsibility, you can very well arrive at amounts like that – it seems very high – but there must be at least half, or even two thirds of the salary that are variable and conditional on results. In this case this year, there would have been no payment of the variable salary. For me, it is rather applying the rate that is unfortunately applicable to all clubs.”

During his hearing before the Senate’s information mission on the intervention of investment funds in French professional football last June, Labrune confirmed the amount of his remuneration. “The board of directors of the League, in this case the club presidents, decided to increase my remuneration to 1.2 million euros gross per year, considering the investment that had been mine, the responsibilities that are mine and the benchmark of the European market,” explained the former president of OM.

The LFP election will take place on September 10 with two candidates in the running, Vincent Labrune and Cyril Linette, who has obtained the sponsorship of the Union des acteurs du foot (UAF), necessary for his candidacy. In exchange, the latter has committed to leaving the board of directors if he is not elected.
