green light from Argentine justice, the two players can return to France

All that was missing was the green light from judge Eleonora Arenas. It’s done. Fifty-seven days after their first hours of detention, France XV internationals Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou are authorized to leave Argentina to return home.

At a hearing in Mendoza on Tuesday, September 3, the prosecution did not oppose the prosecutor’s recommendation on Monday to authorize the departure of Auradou and Jegou from Argentina, the court said in a statement. “This resolution therefore remains valid, and they will be able to leave the country from now on,” the statement added.

Charged with aggravated rape, for alleged events that occurred on the night of July 6 to 7, following the Blues’ first victorious test, the two rugby players admitted to a consensual sexual relationship, without violence, but they were initially placed in detention for around ten days, then placed under house arrest in Mendoza, then released on August 12.

Both players are hoping for a dismissal.

The grip of the Argentine justice system has loosened as a result of “notorious contradictions, inconsistencies, gray areas” in the plaintiff’s version, according to the defense. Auradou and Jegou had even recovered their passports and were authorized to travel to Buenos Aires.

They were waiting for the validation of their psychological assessment results, the last expected act of investigation. The plaintiff’s lawyers can still request the extension of these assessments, but they are no longer required to be in Argentina. They could therefore take the plane to Paris this Tuesday at the end of the day in Buenos Aires.

The two players, who had their first selection with the French XV in Argentina, are now hoping to obtain a dismissal in this case. To do this, they will have to wait a few days for the public prosecutor in Mendoza to make a decision. When contacted, the French Rugby Federation prefers to wait for this potential decision before making any comments. On the clubs’ side, it is the same discretion. Section Paloise lets the lawyer speak and Stade Rochelais plans a press release. As for the terms of a return to the field, the leaders are waiting to talk with their players.
