While the idea of keeping the Olympic cauldron in the Tuileries Gardens seemed to have won over a portion of the general public and Parisians, the mayor of Paris announced last week her desire to see the Olympic rings remain permanently attached to the Eiffel Tower after the Paralympic Games. They would be replaced by identical, but lighter, copies.

But while Anne Hidalgo claims to have the IOC’s agreement to do so, she clearly did not ask the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, or one of Gustave Eiffel’s descendants, who publicly opposed the idea, for their opinion. Nor did she receive any support from Internet users, many of whom opposed the idea.

Almost unanimous against the idea

A petition launched to say “no” to the permanent Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower already has nearly 33,000 signatures as of Tuesday. We took the opportunity to ask our readers for their opinion. And here again, the opinion is almost unanimous.
