For two weeks, students in southern Basse-Terre have been deprived of swimming. The courses were suspended by an order from the Rectorate of Guadeloupe due to an excessive presence of pleasure boats which have taken up residence near the coast at Rivière Sens. The circle of swimmers in the Basse-Terre region is calling for more sanctions.
26 yesterday, 17 today. Every year at the same time, the high tourist season, pleasure boats invest the coastline of Rivière Sens beach.
Boats on which several dozen people live and which represent a high health risk for the activities of the swimming club located in Rivière Sens. Normally, the site receives nearly 500 students from South Basse-Terre every day.

A club on borrowed time, which has already lost 90% of its activities, after the closure of the Rivière des Pères swimming pool, a site previously used and all of whose employees now depend on this school swimming. Of course, political leaders have been contacted several times about this situation. But every year, at carnival time, boaters invade the coastline. They are at anchor and dump their waste into the sea. This poses a pollution problem and an obvious health risk for swimming.
-Politicians say they have been looking into the issue since last year. According to reports, they are currently in the final stages of a process to install a demarcation that would safeguard at least 80 meters offshore of the coastline. But the circle of swimmers in the Basse-Terre region is hoping for a more immediate reaction.

And despite around ten fines issued yesterday by the gendarmerie, it is clear that this is not enough.
