why Netflix never produced the filmmaker's latest “risky” series

David Lynch could have produced one last series for Netflix, according to platform boss Ted Sarandos, and it would have been “mysterious and risky”.

This week, David Lynch died. The filmmaker of Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet et Sailor et Lula leaves behind a gigantic body of work and the tears of the many lovers of his work. Both a matrix of artists and a totem of fans, the co-creator of Twin Peaks was adored by the industry, the press, the general public and young moviegoers alike. Rare are the artists who will have united so muchwhat's more at the end of such a radical and unique career.

David Lynch and Netflix: I love you neither

His latest audiovisual works – since he was also a photographer, musician, poet and painter – therefore come down to a handful of short films, but above all to his ultimate masterpiece (no offense to the rest of the editorial staff), Twin Peaks: The Return. However, as Netflix boss Ted Sarandos recently confirmed on social media, Netflix was still willing to develop what would have been David Lynch's final series:

« [Il] came to Netflix to pitch a mini-series, which we rushed to. It was a creation by David Lynch, therefore mysterious and risky, but we wanted to embark on this artistic adventure with this genius. First Covid, then certain medical uncertainties prevented the production of this project, but we made it clear that as soon as he was able to resume it, we would be up for it. »

The filmmaker's last masterpiece (and greatest?)

From The Return (2017), David Lynch attempted to develop several projects, including two (known) with Netflix. The first, Snootworldwas an animated film co-written by Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, Welcome to Marwen) about small creatures in a crazy, dreamlike world. The platform at the red N would have refused the filmmaker's pitch.

The other abandoned project – mentioned by Ted Sarandos? – is the series known asUnrecorded Night (working title Wisteria). In November 2020, in an issue of Production Weeklyit was a question that the filmmaker writes and directs 13 episodes of the series. He would have collaborated once again with Peter Deming, director of photography of Lost Highway et Mulholland Drive.
