stagnates in the city and backpedals in the countryside

The French took their bikes as much in 2024 as in 2023. This is what emerges from the figures published Friday by the Vélo & Marche network. Data which confirms the slowdown in the progression of this mode of transport after an explosion during the Covid pandemic.

The counters positioned on cycle paths across recorded passages increasing by 1% over the year, while the practice had increased by more than 10% per year between 2020 and 2022. Already in 2023, the increase was only 5%.

Freezing of funding included in the plan

In detail, the practice stagnates in urban areas and has even declined slightly in rural and peri-urban areas in 2024, particularly on weekends. The weather played little role, with a stable summer compensating for a rainy spring and September.

“Faced with such a loss of momentum, the objective (announced by the Borne government) of 12% bicycle modal share in 2030 seems less and less realistic,” regrets the Vélo & Marche network, which brings together communities engaged in development of the bicycle. “This is all the more true as the freezing of funding included in the bicycle plan jeopardizes the implementation of community cycling policies,” underlines the network.

All territories are not equal: cycling has increased significantly in Bordeaux, Rouen or Toulouse in 2024, but it has stagnated in , and little progress (+ 4%) in and , or in (+ 2 %).

This analysis was carried out with the financial support of Ademe and the Ministry of Transport and is based on a representative sample of 315 meters throughout the territory. This assessment is provisional and must be refined in spring 2025 with the integration of all the counters shared with the National Attendance Platform.
