. Road – Jasper De Buyst: “I could lose 35% of my lung capacity”

Jasper De Buyst will begin its twelfth professional season in 2025, and will try to forget a disappointing 2024 season. In fact, the Belgian training Lotto did not have a brilliant individual season. As best results, we will retain an 8th place in the Ceramic Routeor even a 24th place at Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne. If these results were not up to par, there may be reasons to explain this poor performance. He indeed suffers from post-Covid asthma, which has a significant impact on his performance and the rest of his professional career.

“I have to take inhalers every day, like any other asthma patient”

Jasper De Buyst spoke in an interview with Sporza on his health problems: “In 2024, I had many health problems. After investigation, it turned out that I had developed post-Covid asthma. Some analyzes showed that I could lose 35% of my lung capacity. is pretty extreme, but it doesn't necessarily mean the end of my career. I have to take inhalers every day, just like any other asthma patient. Of course, I'm not the only rider in the peloton who has asthma. .but it is a new element to deal with, and we are currently working to find the right dosage”.

Despite his health problems, De Buyst recently won two championship titles Belgian champion on track. He will remain a key member in the spring and in the sprint trains for his training, being one of the most important teammates of the team Lotto : “I will normally participate in the classics, mainly in the service of Arnaud De Lie. I want to support him as long as possible”. In addition, he will start a Grand Tour in 2025, a first since the Tour de 2023. He hopes to return to France: “Unlike last year, I should normally be present at the Tour. I was not there last year because my little girl had just been born”he concludes.
