Decommissioned on October 20 during the elimination test 2024 Track World Championships following a maneuver deemed dangerous by the commissioners – he had deliberately deviated from his trajectory to hinder the Portuguese Diogo Narciso – the Dutch track rider then had a inappropriate behavior towards the latter, addressing them “indecent and very expressive gestures when leaving the track“, according to the press release published by theUCI this Friday. A reaction which directly earned him a disqualification and a first fine of 1000 Swiss francs.

A five-week suspension
But the international body did not intend to stop there and immediately launched a disciplinary procedure, which resulted two months later in an increased sentence for the double world track champion. In violation of articles 12.4.010 and 12.4.017(d) of the UCI Regulations, the 30-year-old rider received a five-week suspension (from December 27, 2024 to 1is February 2025 (inclusive) as well as a new fine. Jan-Willem van Schip is not his first attempt, since he had already been disqualified during the Madison des Paris Olympics 2024 for inappropriate behavior, after hitting the Briton with his helmet Ollie Wood.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announces that the disciplinary proceedings initiated against the Dutch rider Jan-Willem van Schip in relation to his behavior after the Commissioners had informed him of his relegation during the men's elimination event Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Championships 2024 is finished. In reaction to the Commissioners' decision to relegate him, Mr. van Schip made indecent and very expressive gestures when leaving the track.
This behavior, which occurred in a public setting and in direct reaction to a decision by the Commissioners, was considered a violation of articles 12.4.010 and 12.4.017(d) of the UCI Regulations, and a suspension from December 27, 2024 to December 1is February 2025 (inclusive) and the payment of a fine were imposed on the rider. These sanctions come in addition to the decisions of the Stewards to disqualify the rider and impose a fine on him for his behavior following the initial decision to relegate him for deviation. Mr van Schip fully cooperated in the proceedings and admitted the violation of the UCI Regulations.
