A bicycle broken in two. Remco Evenepoel, victim of a fall in training on Tuesday December 3, was taken to hospital, report several Belgian media which publish images of the Belgian cyclist from the Soudal Quick-Step team, supported by paramedics.

Information confirmed by the father of the double Olympic champion from . “Remco was transferred to the Erasme hospital in Anderlecht [en région bruxelloise]. We're still waiting to see how he's doing. We're on our way to the hospital.”declared Patrick Evenepoel to the daily The Latest News.

The manager of the Belgian team Patrick Lefevere, who spoke to Belgian television Sporza, confirmed that his rider, who was training alone, is suffering “pain in the shoulder and one hand” and that “the doctors will take care of it”. If he did not specify the nature of the injuries, he specified that his runner had not been able to avoid the open door of a Belgian post vehicle (confirmed by the latter).

“Such accidents unfortunately happen five times a day, people don’t pay attention and open their doors”he continued, confirming that the bike of the third in the last Tour de France “broke in two” under the violence of the shock. “But it’s better that it’s his bike rather than his arm”he said again.

At 24, Remco Evenepoel has already suffered two heavy falls in his career: the first during the 2020 Tour of Lombardy, where he crossed a parapet in a descent, forcing him to almost nine months without competition. The second during the 2024 Tour of the Basque Country, where he was caught in a collective fall which notably involved Jonas Vingegaard. He had broken his collarbone but managed to get on the podium at the Tour de France three and a half months later.

Seen last weekend in Doha on the sidelines of the Qatar Grand Prix, the leader of the Belgian team was back this week in Belgium to continue his preparation for the next season. His return to competition is, in principle, scheduled for early February.
