Val-du-Layon. 4,300 km by bike across Europe

It's been almost four months since Élisabeth and Frédéric Tijou have been traveling the roads of Europe on their bike, with the aim of traveling around the world. After leaving Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, they crossed Europe to Budapest, before going up to Poland. They then went back down for two weeks to Cyprus and, finally, Turkey.

What interests us is the way in which borders are experienced. »

We had a lot of great encounters, with very hospitable people, but also intrigued. Apart from all the discoveries of magnificent landscapes and cities, what interested us was the way in which borders are experienced. There were incessant passages between Switzerland and Germany, without even realizing it. In Poland, we walked closely along the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders with interesting discussions. And in Cyprus, we were lucky enough to be able to travel through this country from both sides: annexed by Turkey, the north is not recognized by the UN. We crossed the checkpoint numerous times and spoke with people about this grotesque situation. Otherwise, of course, in Poland we went through the Second War (“Hitler's eagle's nest”, Warsaw ghetto, Mauthausen concentration camp). The position of Kaliningrad is also astonishing, a Russian enclave in Belarus remember Élisabeth and Frédéric Tijou.

They have a host of anecdotes to tell: certain train or bus journeys, the choir with percussion on a ferry, welcoming people.

Their break in Türkiye was an opportunity to meet up with members of their family who had come to visit them.

Currently, they have changed continents and are wandering around Asia.
