Genesio’s “big disappointment”, who expects a reaction in the Champions League

Saint-Étienne-Lille: Genesio’s “big disappointment”, who expects a reaction in the Champions League

He didn’t have words as strong as his president, but Bruno Genesio also had reason to be frustrated on Friday evening in the corridors of Geoffroy-Guichard. Because after its defeats on the pitch of Slavia Prague (2-1) and at home against Paris (3-1), Lille fell for the third time in a row in all competitions by losing to Saint-Etienne (1-0), at the opening of the fourth day of Ligue 1.

Extremely upset, Olivier Létang did not hesitate to point out the “unacceptable behavior” of his group after this “shameful match”. A little more measured, Genesio nevertheless said he was very disappointed by the performance of his men in Forez, especially against a team that had not yet taken a point in this championship.

“We’re not going to make excuses”

“We were too poor technically in the game. We had a big territorial domination but quite sterile and not enough clear chances. We lacked technical accuracy in the last third of the pitch, with crosses that were far too imprecise. We also lacked efficiency on our three or four clear chances,” he lamented, while his team remains stuck at six points taken from a possible twelve.

“We’re not going to make excuses. We played a coherent first five minutes, then we conceded an unfortunate goal and then we couldn’t find the solutions. After the opening goal, we confused pressure with impatience, even if it was well-intentioned. We changed the system at the end of the match to try to disrupt the opponent. We didn’t play the game we wanted to play,” insisted Genesio, his face closed and his eyes already turned towards the trip to Lisbon on Tuesday, where Losc will face Sporting to start its Champions League campaign.

“Tonight is the first big disappointment of the season, our first big underperformance. It’s up to us to question ourselves. We’re all disappointed, all frustrated. We can’t go back, we’re going to have to recover well and focus on the next match,” concluded Genesio. For its part, the promoted Saint-Etienne team is taking advantage of this success to temporarily get out of the red zone.
