Pidcock’s surprising message after his last minute “deselection” by Ineos

Announced as one of the outsiders of the Tour of Lombardy on Saturday, Tom Pidcock was finally removed from the list of participants this Friday. On Instagram, the Ineos runner expressed his incomprehension and suggested that he wanted to run.

Tom Pidcock was to be one of Tadej Pogacar’s main competitors on Saturday during the Tour of Lombardy, but he will ultimately not be at the start. Absent from the final list communicated by his Ineos team this Friday, the Briton is neither injured nor ill and was surprised by this decision in a message posted on Instagram.

“While everything was better after an eventful year, I was deselected for Lombardy tomorrow,” explained the runner. “I’m in great shape and I was really looking forward to it.” Present in Italy for a week, Tom Pidcock ran the preparation races for the last Monument of the year. His exclusion from the team seems even more surprising.

“I guess the vacation starts early.”

Second in the Tour of Emilia last weekend, he then took second place behind Tadej Pogacar, in Dantean conditions. Although he had a complicated season, despite a victory in the Amstel Gold Race and an Olympic mountain bike title, he seemed in good shape, capable of at least one place on the podium.

So far, no information has filtered out on possible tensions between Pidcock and his Ineos team. The Briton is even under contract until 2027. But his 2024 season will end like this. “I imagine the holidays are starting earlier,” he concluded. “Thank you for everyone’s support even in difficult times.”
