they only travel by bike and explain why

According to a study published by the Ministry of Transport, 25% of French people cycle at least once a week. For Cyril Tisserand, it’s more, much more. As this resident of Saint-Dié confides, it has been almost twenty years since he abandoned the car in favor of the bicycle and he therefore goes to work by bicycle every day.

Significant savings

“3 km outward, 3 km back, or thirty minutes of moderate activity every day,” explains this father for whom cycling is synonymous with freedom and health. A feeling shared by “Tof”, he who “hates the car”. “For me, it’s a burden. I do everything to use it as little as possible. Besides, I have only had one tank since May 2023,” assures this retiree from the SNCF.

Between buying or renting a car, the cost of fuel, as well as that of insurance and parking, “we save at least two or three thousand euros per year,” estimates Cyril Tisserand. He, who would under no circumstances wish to return to the car, points out that this mode of travel also contributes to better air quality while reducing noise in cities.

The only problem for these two Deodatians is the lack of facilities. “The city needs to make more room for cyclists and overhaul what already exists,” believes “Tof,” who recognizes that traveling by bike in Saint-Dié is sometimes dangerous. For greater safety, he does not hesitate to take a few detours to avoid busy roads. “We are part of the bicycle commission, a design office has been mandated, things are being put in place, like zone 30 which is a good thing, but it takes a long time,” notes Cyril Tisserand.

“A large part of the population will get involved”

However, he assures us, there is a real demand. “We are seeing more and more cyclists without facilities, and the day there are some, it is certain that a large part of the population will do so.” Besides, there is no age to start. Proof of this is that at the age of 80, Yves Etienne skillfully abandoned the car and therefore travels thousands of kilometers by bicycle each year.
